REM and deep sleep, not just total sleep time, associated with disease risk

For years, the general medical advice regarding sleep has focused primarily on the clock, urging people to hit a specific number of hours to stay healthy. However, a comprehensive new study suggests that what happens during those hours may be just as important as how long we spend in bed. Published in the journal PLOS Medicine, the research indicates that REM and deep sleep specifically are closely linked to a lower risk of developing dozens of different diseases, suggesting that sleep quality is a vital pillar of long term wellness.

To get an accurate picture of how humans actually sleep, researchers from Capital Medical University led by Shengzhi Sun moved away from traditional self reported surveys, which are often unreliable. Instead, they utilized data from over 95,000 participants in the UK Biobank who wore wrist accelerometers for a full week. By applying a deep learning algorithm to this movement data, the team could distinguish between light sleep, deep sleep, and REM cycles. They then tracked these individuals for nearly nine years to see how their nightly patterns correlated with more than 1,000 possible health outcomes.

The results were striking, particularly regarding REM sleep. Higher amounts of this stage were associated with a reduced risk of 83 different diseases, including significant protections against dementia, heart failure and Parkinson’s disease. Deep sleep also played a protective role, showing links to lower rates of major depressive disorder and type 2 diabetes. Conversely, those who struggled with irregular schedules or frequently woke up during the night saw an increase in risks related to anxiety and substance use disorders.

While the composition of sleep matters deeply, total duration still plays a fundamental role as a baseline for health. The study found a non linear relationship between time spent asleep and disease risk, identifying a sweet spot between six and eight hours as the ideal window for most people. Those consistently sleeping fewer than five hours faced the highest level of clinical vulnerability across 37 different conditions. While the authors note that this observational study cannot prove that certain sleep patterns directly cause these diseases, they emphasize that maintaining both sufficient length and high quality sleep acts as a crucial safeguard for middle aged and older adults.
