Picking up a book for the simple joy of it may do far more than just pass the time, according to new research from the University of Cambridge. Academics from the university’s department of psychiatry suggest that reading for pleasure can significantly boost overall health and wellbeing across all age groups, regardless of the genre or material being consumed. Published in the journal Psychological Medicine, the review indicates that regular reading enhances cognitive performance and strengthens mental health while reducing the long term risk of dementia.
Professor Barbara Sahakian and Dr Christelle Langley emphasize that these benefits are lifelong, noting that it is never too late for an adult to start a reading habit. For younger generations, the impact is particularly profound. A study involving over 10,000 young people revealed that those who read for fun early in life tend to possess better memories, longer attention spans, and superior problem solving skills. These children often perform better academically and maintain healthier lifestyles characterized by improved sleep patterns and reduced screen time.
To encourage this habit in children, Dr Langley suggests focusing on interest rather than strict literary standards. She argues that educators and parents should use a child’s existing passions, such as favorite television shows or video games, as a gateway to get them interested in reading. By finding topics they genuinely enjoy, young people are more likely to engage with texts, which in turn helps lower their risk of developing mental health issues during their formative years.
Beyond individual cognitive gains, the researchers highlighted the social dimension of literacy through book clubs and reading circles. Professor Sahakian noted that these groups provide vital social interaction that combats isolation and fosters a sense of community connection. This combination of mental stimulation and social engagement proves especially powerful for those aged 55 and older, who show a significantly lower likelihood of developing cognitive impairments when staying active through reading.
