Pojoaque Pueblo graduates celebrate sobriety on the ‘Path to Wellness’

For Stefan Catanach, the small wax candle flickering atop a frosted cake on Tuesday didn’t mark another birthday, but something far more significant. The celebration took place at the Homewood Suites near Buffalo Thunder, where Catanach and another participant were honored for completing the Pojoaque Tribal Court’s Path to Wellness program. After a grueling year of counseling, mandatory meetings, and balancing multiple jobs, Catanach finally reached the milestone of one year of sobriety.

The Path to Wellness program operates as a diversionary path for individuals who have committed nonviolent crimes linked to substance abuse. Rather than facing traditional incarceration, eligible participants commit to a rigorous twelve month journey of behavioral health support and addiction treatment. According to Chief Judge Anthony Mozingo, the process is demanding and reserved strictly for those truly dedicated to transforming their lives. For those who persevere through the clinical requirements and disciplinary structure, the reward is profound: they graduate without a permanent criminal record hanging over their heads.

This approach reflects a broader philosophy within tribal courts that prioritizes restoration over punishment. While treatment courts are becoming more common across the United States to reduce recidivism and legal costs, Judge Mozingo noted that tribal systems often lean even more heavily into wellness due to shared heritage and community values. By integrating professional psychological help with cultural support and personal accountability, the court aims to address the root causes of addiction rather than simply penalizing the symptoms.

Program Director Angel Martinez emphasized that the graduation was about more than just checking boxes or meeting court mandates; it was a recognition of courage and resilience. She described the experience as building a healthier life supported by family, mentors, and staff. As he looked toward his future with newfound stability, Catanach expressed a simple desire to maintain his momentum and stay focused on his long term goals now that he has proven change is possible.
